10 Best Used Cars Under $8000

As the quality of new cars continues to improve, so does the pool of used cars. For this collection of recommendations, we first compiled a list of all 2004-and-newer used cars with a Kelley Blue Book Retail Value of less than $8,000 as of February 2014, then handpicked 10 standouts based on a variety of factors including reputation and desirability — including one that starts just under $5,000.

2007 Honda Civic

The Honda Civic tops this annual list again with a bulletproof reputation for reliability and a uniquely pleasant demeanor. The Civic is comfortable on the highway, responsive around town and always feels just right, from steering and pedal feel to the door handles and turn indicator stalk. Highway fuel economy up to 36 mpg is merely icing on the cake.

2011 Hyundai Accent

The 2011 Accent is the newest car on this year's list, and unless its first owner(s) did a lot of driving, used examples are still covered under Hyundai's impressive 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.

2005 Honda Accord

One of three Hondas on this list, the seventh-generation Accord combines famous reliability and refinement in a well-rounded package that's also roomy, comfortable and just a bit more fun to drive than most other midsize sedans.

2005 Toyota Camry

Camry owners are quietly but fiercely loyal, and there's a reason why: these are comfortable, easy-to-own sedans that seem to last forever. With a roomy interior and simple controls, the Camry is easy for all occupants to love.

2007 Mazda3

This compact car offers a lot of value for the money, and is a terrific balance between practicality and fun. In fact, the Mazda3 has made our annual list of 10 Coolest Cars Under $18,000 every year of its existence, dating back to the 2004 model year.

2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

At some point in your life, chances are you will need a truck, and the 2007 Silverado serves as an affordable way to get into one. In addition to the towing and hauling capability that you get when buying a pickup, the Silverado provides a comfortable ride and enough power to get the job done.

2005 Honda Pilot

Honda reliability and quality shine through in the 3-row, 8-passenger Pilot. This minivan alternative is ready to comfortably carry several people and their gear, can tow a trailer and is an all-season all-star. You won't get the same fuel economy as with an Odyssey, but in return the Pilot offers AWD and a more adventurous persona.

2004 Toyota Prius

The Prius has the versatility of a hatchback, the roominess of a midsize sedan and the frugality of a hybrid — all with Toyota's trademark refinement and reliability. Fuel economy is an excellent 48 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway. It isn't the most exciting car to drive, but its practicality more than makes up for that.

2007 Ford Escape

The Escape's rugged look and well-crafted interior make it seem like a more expensive vehicle than it actually is. The compact SUV has options like AWD and storage solutions for bikes and outdoor gear, appealing features for a small family who wants a versatile vehicle that can deal with snow or dirt.

2005 Volvo S60

The only luxury car on this list is also the most affordable, checking in with a Kelley Blue Book Retail Value of just under $5,000. This fun-to-drive sedan has a pleasantly posh interior, unique Swedish styling and the safety features that Volvo prides itself on. It offers a few surprises too, like a massive trunk and fuel economy that's better than you might expect.
